Applications for appointed positions on committees, practice councils, task forces, and ad hoc volunteer groups open in the summer and are selected by AHIMA leadership in the fall of the calendar year prior to the next term. Committee, council, and task force appointments exist for at least one year. Ad hoc groups are formed with shorter time commitments throughout the year.

Elected Positions
Elected positions are leadership roles on the AHIMA Board of Directors, the House of Delegates, the Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM), and the Council for Excellence in Education (CEE). The application to serve is due March 31. All required documents must be included. The election takes place in July, and the winners will take office on January 1. The AHIMA Election timeline can be found here.
The positions to be filled are:
- AHIMA Board President/Chair-elect (1 position)
- AHIMA Board Directors (3 positions)
- CCHIIM Commissioner (3 positions; CCHIIM is looking for candidates who hold one or more of these credentials CCS, CDIP, CHDA, CHPS, and RHIT)
- Speaker-elect of the House of Delegates (1 position)
- CEE Member (2 positions)
The elected officials will assume office on January 1 of each year. The Nominating Committee places a high priority on diversity and seeks candidate diversity at the national level.

**Please note, individuals currently serving their CSA as an officer or in the House of Delegates or serving on national volunteer groups are required to resign from the position if elected.
Review the descriptions of AHIMA’s elected leadership positions below. Before you apply, assess the level of your leadership skills and abilities with the AHIMA Volunteer Leadership Competencies Self-Assessment tool (printable self-scoring PDF version) or (online automatic scoring version). Also, all applicants submitting a nomination for the board should review the list of 2021 Board Attributes and determine their qualifications.
President/Chair-elect: The President/Chair leads the Board of Directors, which governs the association, sets strategy, budget, and maintains fiduciary oversight. The President/Chair serves as an ex officio member of all volunteer groups.
Directors: The Directors serve as voting members of the Board of Directors as well as voting members of the House of Delegates. The Board of Directors governs the association, sets strategy, budget, and maintains fiduciary oversight. Members of the Board are also called upon to represent the association at meetings and to speak on behalf of AHIMA and the HIM profession.
CCHIIM Commissioners: The Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM) serves the public by establishing, implementing and enforcing standards and procedures for certification and recertification of health informatics and information management (HIIM) professionals.
Speaker-elect of the House of Delegates: The Speaker-elect supports the House of Delegates (HoD) along with the Speaker leads the House Leadership, and serves on the Board of Directors as Speaker.
CEE Council Members: CEE Council members improve and adapt the education strategy for health information and related professions, focused on future opportunities and challenges. Responsible for fostering support and adoption of new initiatives and improvements to curriculum, credentials, academic programs and resources. Focus on the changing needs of the students and working professionals and consider innovative ways of providing world class education in HIM.
The positions above also serve as liaisons to the CEE and affiliated organizations.

Timeline for the 2020 Nomination and Election Process:
(Please note some logistics and dates within this timeline are subject to change)
- March 31 - Deadline for submitting the Volunteer Application online. Applicants should go to myAHIMA.org, upload a photo and enter brief bio information in the contents of your profile. All submissions due by close of business. Please note all required materials (resume, three current letters of reference) are due in the online Volunteer Center application. Your brief bio and photo are required to be uploaded in your myAHIMA profile. All information is due at the time of submission. All recommendation letters must be signed by the recommender, and if possible on letterhead.
- April - Nominating Committee to review nominations and conduct telephone interviews with all nominees
- May - Nominating Committee meets to select the 2020 Ballot Candidates
- May through June - Ballot Candidates provide profile and other information for the AHIMA ballot to appear in the June Journal of AHIMA
- Mid-June - The 2020 Ballot Candidate bios and photos are posted on the AHIMA website and in the AHIMA Membership and State Leaders and House of Delegates Engage Communities. CSA Leaders will also feature candidates on their websites.
- June 29 through July 10, 2020 - AHIMA National Candidate Discussions Forum in Engage
- June 1 - AHIMA ballot candidates are featured in the June issue of the Journal of AHIMA
- July 13 at 8 a.m. CDT through July 27 at 5 p.m. CDT - AHIMA Polls open
- Late July - Announcement of the 2020 AHIMA Election Results
Volunteer Leadership Competencies Self Assessment
Purpose:
This tool outlines the core competencies needed for AHIMA volunteer leadership positions and specifies additional competencies for leadership roles. It is a useful tool for professional development and when considering your qualifications for leadership positions and for tracking your professional development.
Instruction:
Self-assess your competency by rating your experience according to the following scale. Examples of experience may include executive/governance level experience, such as CSA or other non- profit, for-profit, or work setting, or personal experience.
- Little/No Experience (1): I have little or no experience in this area. I would like to learn and improve.
- Basic (2): I have basic skills in this area, but no professional experience. I would like to improve.
- Intermediate (3): I am at an intermediate level in this area. I am somewhat confident in my ability, although my opportunities and experience are limited.
- Expert (4): I have advanced knowledge and expertise in this area and significant direct experience. Others recognize me for my expertise.
Core Competencies for All Volunteers
- Adheres and Advocates for the AHIMA code of ethics, and any other appropriate codes of conduct, values honesty, integrity and transparency.
- Demonstrates Commitment to the mission, vision, values and strategy of AHIMA.
- Acts as a Team Player/Collaborator, works well on teams, fosters trust among group members, and adjusts behavior in order to establish relationships with teams. Motivates and desires to improve the quality of service.
- Respects Diversity and Fosters Inclusion of all races, cultures, disabilities, ages, and genders equitably, with respect and sensitivity. Ensures all voices are listened to and respected.
- Presents a Positive Professional Image, reflects the profession as a confident, proficient, skilled, qualified expert, and qualified authority in HIM.
